Charting the futures of aquatic agricultural systems in Southern Africa

Fish agri-food systems are vital to food and nutrition security and sustainable agricultural livelihoods. Fish consumption is currently contributing more than 20% of the protein consumed from animal sources in Africa. This is expected to grow by 25-48% in the next ten years and the price is likely to increase at 1% per year in Africa. About 12.3 million men and women in Africa depend on fisheries, aquaculture and related industries as a source of income and employment, with women making up more than a fourth of this work force.

The Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) convened a one-day stakeholder consultative meeting on the "Formation of Innovation Platforms for Aflatoxin Management in Ghana" at the FARA Secretariat Conference Hall located in Roman Ridge, Accra, Ghana on 17th June 2015. The meeting was attended by about 45 participants representing various stakeholders in the Ghanaian agricultural and trade sectors including the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, farmer-based organizations, researchers, agribusiness, and development partners.

UniBRAIN incubation helps create efficiency for livestock agribusiness

On 19th-20th May, the UniBRAIN team participated in DANIDA's (Danish International Development Agency) review visit to CCLEAr (the Creating Competitive Livestock Entrepreneurs in Agribusiness) incubator located at Dodowa in Ghana, some 40 Kms away from the capital city Accra. CCLEAr is a FARA UniBRAIN supported public private agribusiness incubator that focuses on the livestock value chain such as piggery, grasscutter, poultry and dairy.

FARA Secretariat hosts AHC-STAFF Methodology Validation Workshop

The European Union, currently one of the largest benefactors to Africa's agricultural development efforts, has partnered with FARA in a three year-initiative dubbed the ''Africa Human Capital in Science, Technology & Agripreneurship for Food Security Framework (AHC-STAFF).'' The AHC-STAFF, funded to the tune of nearly Euros 4 million, seeks to develop country-based and regional investment frameworks to guide domestic and/or development partner support to demand-led and forecasted human capital formation in agriculture. In the short-run, this will benefit country CAADP implementation.

Technical Skills profiling and tracking moves from analogue to digital under the eCapacities Decision Making Matrix (DSM) initiative

FARA under the eCapacities Africa programme has unveiled a digital platform of mapping the capacities of agricultural institutions in Africa for matching demand to supply of capacities. The platform provides a real-time review of the levels of capacity and demand in each participating country and dynamically estimates the capacity gaps for use in priority setting and targeting of investments.

FARA UniBRAIN through her model of Agribusiness incubation has demonstrated that products of science can be transformed into sustainable streams of income for farmers. Through incubation farmers are now making business within diverse value chains and gaining modest economic and social benefits. The World Bank has been managing MDTF of FARA funded by EU which supports agriculture research in Africa geared towards transforming lives of farmers. The vision behind the support is to have research outputs improve productivity of farmers with a glimmer hope that they translate into economic gain.
