The Executive Director of FARA Dr. Yemi Akinbamijo met with the Director of the Department for Rural Economy and Agriculture, African Union Commission (AUC-DREA), Dr. Godfrey Bahiigwa on the margins of the third PAFO General Assembly on 19th February 2017. This was the first time Dr. Bahiigwa was meeting with FARA since he took his appointment as AUC-DREA Director in November 2016.
Dr. Akinbamijo briefed the AUC-DREA Director on ongoing and upcoming continental agricultural research initiatives and events, pointing out these are all aligned to the Science Agenda for Agriculture in Africa. He pointed out that every deliverable of FARA and its constituents is a deliverable of the AUC-DREA, hence the need for formalisation of exchanges and reporting of results from FARA constituents to the AUC-DREA. He expressed FARA’s desire to deepen its engagement with the AUC-DREA by activating the existing MoU between the AUC and FARA.
Dr. Bahiigwa welcomed FARA’s readiness to work more closely with the AUC-DREA. He pointed out that AUC-DREA is close to completing the development of a 4-year business plan focusing on implementation of the 2014 Malabo declaration of accelerating African agricultural growth and transformation. He guided that FARA should use this document as a key reference in identifying its contribution to AUC-DREA’s deliverables.
Further, Dr. Bahiigwa announced that the first Turkey-Africa agriculture ministers meeting and agribusiness forum will be held between 27-28 April 2017 in Antalya, Turkey. Its main objective is to strengthen agribusiness links between Africa and Turkey while it features a ministerial meeting, business-to-business (B2B) events an agricultural expo and side events. One of its outcomes is a declaration that will be adopted by ministers.
