Two international soil health initiatives, the Africa Union Soil Observatory (AUSO) and the Mediterranean Soil Health initiative (SOILS4MED), have signed a letter of agreement to advance knowledge exchange on soil health indicators and soil information systems in support of food security and sustainable land management.

AUSO is focused on building a comprehensive soil observatory for Africa, and SOILS4MED is working to harmonise soil health monitoring across the Mediterranean region.

Recognising the pressing need for comprehensive soil data and capacity strengthening to support protecting, restoring, and improving soil health, sustainable land management, and climate change adaptation, under the agreement, AUSO and SOILS4MED will exchange information and knowledge on soil health monitoring and indicator development, and collaborate on capacity strengthening activities and stakeholder engagement. The partnership aims to strengthen soil health monitoring and sustainable land management across both regions, with a particular focus on North Africa as a shared geographic interest.

Accra, Ghana – 16 January 2026

The Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) and Farrelly & Mitchell today held a high-level strategic meeting at the FARA Headquarters in Accra, Ghana, to advance discussions on a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at jointly mobilising resources to technically advance projects that address high-priority challenges and opportunities with a special focus on the Common African Agro-Parks (CAAPs) Programme.

The meeting brought together Dr. Aggrey Agumya, Executive Director of FARA, Mr. Malachy Mitchell, Co-founder and Managing Director of Farrelly & Mitchell, and Mr. Stephen Awuah the Regional Director of Farrelly & Mitchell in West Africa. They exchanged views on the strategic, technical, and financial contours of the proposed cooperation.

Responding to a Critical Project Preparation Challenge

The CAAPs Programme, endorsed by the African Union, is a flagship initiative designed to accelerate agro-industrial transformation through integrated, corridor-based agro-parks linking agricultural production zones with processing, energy, logistics, and regional markets under the AfCFTA framework. By advancing bankable agro-industrial corridors, CAAPs aim to reduce Africa’s food import dependence, create decent jobs—particularly for youth and women—and strengthen intra-African trade.

While eleven priority CAAPs corridors have been identified across Africa, the CAAPs Secretariat—hosted by FARA—faces significant upstream constraints, particularly the limited availability of grant and concessional resources required to finance robust prefeasibility and feasibility studies. These studies are indispensable to translate political commitment into technically sound, investment-ready projects that meet international environmental, social, governance, and bankability standards.

Against this backdrop, both leaders recognised the urgency of strengthening structured partnerships capable of bridging the gap between strategic vision and implementable investments.

A Strategic Framework for Resource Mobilisation

The envisaged MoU between FARA and Farrelly & Mitchell will establish a strategic partnership framework to jointly engage development finance institutions, foundations, climate funds, private equity funds, and advisory platforms. The cooperation will focus on mobilising technical assistance, grant funding, and blended-finance instruments to support CAAPs prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and subsequently investment into CAAPs projects.

Farrelly & Mitchell brings experience in structuring and coordinating development finance and advisory engagements with international partners, while FARA provides continental policy anchoring, and coordination with African Union institutions, Regional Economic Communities, Member States and coordination bodies of agri-food system stakeholders e.g. research and innovation, extension, farmers, agribusiness.

The Parties confirmed their joint commitment to finalise the MoU and commence coordinated outreach to prospective funders in early 2026.

Based in Addis Ababa, the Office will deepen CGIAR’s engagement with the African Union (AU), FARA, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Sub-Regional Research Organizations (SROs), and national governments, ensuring that CGIAR’s science responds directly to Africa’s priorities and policy agendas, including AU Agenda 2063, the CAADP framework, and the CAADP Kampala Declaration.

Role and responsibilities

As Head of the CGIAR Liaison Office for Africa, Dr Covic will:

Support the CGIAR Continental Champion in representing and advancing CGIAR’s mission across Africa;

Coordinate CGIAR’s engagement with continental and regional institutions to ensure coherent, timely, and strategic interaction;

Facilitate the development of a demand-driven continental research and innovation portfolio aligned with African priorities;

Strengthen partnerships with national governments, regional bodies, and development partners;

Enhance the visibility and communication of CGIAR’s contributions to transforming Africa’s food, land, and water systems.

Ag. Director of Research and Innovation, FARA

“The world is nothing but change; our life is only perception.” — Marcus Aurelius

This timeless wisdom is fitting for World Soil Day 2025, celebrated under the theme “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities.” As Africa’s cities expand and evolve, it becomes increasingly clear that their sustainability depends on an often-overlooked foundation: the health of the soil beneath and around them. Soils are living systems that deliver essential ecological services, attenuating atmospheric toxins, degrading biotic and abiotic wastes, purifying water, cycling nutrients, storing carbon, and moderating temperature. Without healthy soils, urban environments lose their resilience, becoming vulnerable to flooding, pollution, food insecurity, and biodiversity collapse.

Africa’s urban growth is occurring across landscapes already burdened with high levels of degradation. Current assessments show that as much as 65% of the continent’s productive land is degraded, while about 45% faces risks of desertification. These trends weaken the soil’s ability to regulate water, sustain vegetation, maintain fertility, and support the peri-urban agriculture that feeds millions. Even more concerning is the accelerating pace of decline. Over the past two decades, the proportion of degraded land in Sub-Saharan Africa has nearly doubled, rising from 7.1% to 14.5%, a rate faster than the global average and indicative of mounting pressures on ecosystems.

Urban pollution further complicates this picture. The soils in many African cities now serve as sinks for heavy metals, hydrocarbons, microplastics, and industrial wastes. Research reveals that peri-urban farmlands around some cities in Africa contain multiple heavy metals that exceed permissible limits for food-producing soils. In others, wastewater-irrigated fields exhibit zinc concentrations that surpass WHO thresholds. Such pollution poses direct threats to “life on land,” undermining plant health, degrading microbial ecosystems, and exposing urban populations, especially those reliant on city-grown vegetables, to serious health risks.

These ecological failures translate into significant economic losses. In Africa, soil degradation contributes to an estimated 3% annual loss of agricultural GDP, draining resources that countries urgently need for infrastructure, climate adaptation, and urban development. This economic argument reinforces a simple truth: healthy soils are not an environmental luxury but a core asset for national stability and urban prosperity.

At the same time, urban and peri-urban agriculture remain a vital lifeline for African cities. Studies show that these systems supply up to 40% of cassava, 80% of poultry products, 90% of lettuce, and an astonishing 95% of fresh milk in some rapidly growing cities. When soils in these zones degrade or become contaminated, the nutritional well-being of urban households is directly jeopardized. This linkage between soil health and urban food systems underscores the urgency of coordinated action.

Aligning with the African Union Soil Initiative for Africa (SIA), several key interventions stand out. The first is the placement of real economic value on topsoil. Construction activities often remove fertile topsoil that is treated as waste, yet this material could be redeployed to restore degraded farmland, support urban greening or rehabilitate peri-urban vegetable corridors. Recovering and reusing topsoil should become standard practice in African cities. Equally important is the institutionalization of soil monitoring within urban planning. Soil assessments, contamination checks, and digital soil maps should guide city design decisions and building approvals. Nature-based solutions such as urban forests, permeable pavements, rain gardens, bioswales, and green corridors can help restore soil function while improving urban microclimates. Investments in digital soil advisory services, driven by partnerships among FARA, AARiEIs, CGIAR centres, and the African Union Soil Observatory (AUSO), will provide the real-time data needed for informed decision-making. Public awareness must also deepen, ensuring that citizens, developers, and policymakers understand that soil is a living system whose health underpins urban resilience.

As we commemorate World Soil Day 2025, the message is clear: African cities can only be as healthy as the soils that support them. Safeguarding soil health through better policies, scientific innovation, responsible urban development, and recovery of topsoil is indispensable for building sustainable, vibrant, and equitable cities for future generations.

A major international summit, held for the first time in Africa, will bring together scientists, policymakers and industry leaders from across the world to address the urgent need for sustainable phosphorus management.

The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) is partnering with Lancaster University, Rothamsted Research, The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Ghana and the Forum for Agricultural Research Africa (FARA) to organise the event in Accra, Ghana.

Phosphorus is a key nutrient in crop and livestock production, and is present in human and animal excreta as well as chemical fertilisers. Excess amounts pollute aquatic ecosystems through agricultural run-off and wastewater, which can lead to the development of toxic algal blooms.

Experts warn that without urgent investment and innovation, the lack of availability of fertiliser to Africa’s farmers – exacerbated by population growth and climate change – could threaten the region’s food production.

The eighth Sustainable Phosphorus Summit (SPS8), held from 30 September-3 October, aims to kickstart efforts in Africa to address these issues. Delegates will discuss improving fertiliser efficiency and recovering phosphorus from agricultural runoff and wastewater, enabling it to be reused in agriculture.

Call for action

Adelaide Asante, head of UKCEH’s West Africa office, based in Accra, said: “Amid growing global demand for phosphorus and concern about its environmental impacts, coordinated global action is needed to avoid a crisis that could jeopardise food security and water quality in Africa and worldwide.”

Professor Wole Fatunbi of FARA added: “The Sustainable Phosphorus Summit has come to Africa at the most opportune time when continental efforts are driving effective soil health and nutrient management to achieve sustainable, environmentally friendly agriculture.

“The SPS8 summit will ensure that African voices and experiences are prominent and inform the design of solutions to deliver sustainable phosphorus management.”

The event aims to inspire the creation of an inclusive network of representatives from academia, agriculture, environmental organisations, industry and policy, in order to bring about change across Africa.

The summit runs from 30 Sept-3 October at the Alisa Hotel, North Ridge, Accra, Ghana.

Alisa Hotel, Accra, Ghana | 2–6 June 2025

To foster transdisciplinary exchange on sustainable land management, climate resilience, and agricultural innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa, over 120 leading researchers, policymakers, and practitioners will gather in Accra for the “Status Seminar 2025.” Hosted by the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), and the Center for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn. This high-level event blends cutting-edge science with community-based innovation.

The seminar will spotlight four major regional research projects, including COINS, DecLaRe, Minodu, and InfoRange, as well as the cross-cutting support initiative INTERFACES, which links institutions across Germany and several African countries. These projects collaborate to address pressing challenges in agriculture and natural resource management through inclusive, evidence-based, and scalable solutions.

INTERFACES strengthens the projects’ effectiveness and visibility by supporting knowledge management, networking, science communication, social learning, capacity development, and policy engagement. The seminar will offer a platform to showcase research outcomes and foster dialogue among diverse stakeholders—from scientists to traditional authorities, from youth representatives to development partners.

29th June, 2025

Sidi Ould Tah of Mauritania was today elected President of the African Development Bank Group at the Bank’s Annual Meetings held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Tah was elected by the Bank’s Board of Governors, comprising Finance and Economy Ministers or Central Bank Governors of the Bank Group’s 81 regional and non-regional member countries. The board is the highest decision-making authority for the Bank Group.

The results were announced by Nialé Kaba, Minister of Planning and Development for Côte d’Ivoire, and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Bank Group.

The winning candidate is required to obtain at least 50.01% of both the regional and non-regional votes.

Tah brings over 35 years of experience in African and international finance. He served as president of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) for 10 years from 2015, where he led a full transformation that quadrupled the Bank’s balance sheet, secured a AAA rating, and positioned it among the top-rated development banks focused on Africa.

Addressing the Bank Group’s governors and the media shortly after the announcement, Tah said, “Let’s go to work now, I’m ready!”

A former Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance of Mauritania, Tah has held senior roles in multilateral institutions and has led crisis response, financial reform, and innovative resource mobilization for Africa.

The Board of Governors Steering Committee received and approved a total of five candidates by the closing date of 31 January 2025. The list of candidates was officially announced on 21 February 2025.

The other candidates in the election were:

Amadou Hott (Senegal)

Samuel Maimbo (Zambia)

Mahamat Abbas Tolli (Chad)

Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala (South Africa)

Tah will assume office on 1 September 2025, for a five-year term, following the end of the second mandate of current President, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina.

The African Development Bank’s past heads since its inception in 1964 are:

Mamoun Beheiry (Sudan), 1964-1970

Abdelwahab Labidi (Tunisia), 1970-1976

Kwame Donkor Fordwor (Ghana), 1976-1980

Willa Mung’Omba (Zambia), 1980-1985

Babacar N’diaye (Senegal), 1985-1995

Omar Kabbaj (Morocco), 1995-2005

Donald Kaberuka (Rwanda), 2005-2015

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina (Nigeria), 2015-2025.

The election of a new president comes at a crucial time in the Bank Group’s six decades of existence.
