Under the auspices of the German Ministry for Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE), the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), has joined experts from Europe and Asia to assess opportunities for research cooperation for food and nutrition security in Africa.
The workshop which was under the theme: “Shaping the nutritional environment to promote a balanced diet; Food environments for improved nutrition”, also discussed and clarified the research needs in the area of “food environments for improved nutrition” for Sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia.
Over two days, the experts have sought to help BLE to identify research gaps and to clarify research questions on the sub-themes of consumer markets, nutrition education, structure, and shape of food systems as well as information and communication technology in food environments.
The overall goal is to improve nutrition in the face of the double burden of malnutrition and obesity in the partner countries.
Twenty-nine experts from Africa, South East Asia, and German institutions participated in the workshop. FARA was represented by Benjamin Abugri, Knowledge Management & Outreach Officer.
