The Ministry of Agriculture in Southern Province of Zambia has observed that the lack of innovation in the agriculture sector has negatively affected the sector’s development in the region.
This statement was made by the Acting Provincial Agriculture Coordinator (PACO) Evans Nkhoma at the official opening of Farmers Innovation Contests workshop organized by the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) at Popota Research in Choma District on 23rd August, 2016.
Nkhoma said the province has recorded setbacks due to lack of innovative ideas aimed at improving the Agriculture sector.
Meanwhile, FARA lead specialist on Innovation System and Partnerships, Dr. ’Wole Fatunbi said that FARA will focus on discovering new initiatives that can be shared among peasant farmers. These initiatives will also be developed to better other farmers in the area and help Zambia and Africa in curbing hunger threats.
Dr. Fatunbi further stated that FARA is determined to bring sustainable and cost effective innovations that will help every farmer benefit from their produce. This will be achieved by working in partnership with “the German Government Ministry of Agriculture” he posits.
In his response, Nkhoma thanked FARA and affirms that the organization’s support to the local farmers will help to improve the region in developing new found innovations.
