The Executive Director of FARA, Dr Yemi Akinbamijo paid a visit to EMBARA Cassava and Fruits Center in Cruz das Almas on the 9th of May 2018. The visit was part of FARA’s o going effort to expand its partnership coverage in Brazil within the context of South-South collaboration. Receiving the Executive Director, the Center’s Director General, Dr Alberto Duarte Vilarinhos, expressed the center’s willingness to collaborate with FARA under FARA’s Holistic Empowerment for Livelihood Program (HELP), an evolving program that seeks to strengthen human and institutional capacities for Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) in Africa HELP. The ED stated that the proposed program represents and innovative mechanism under which the power of Brazilian AR4D, matched with the potentials of African AR4D will lead to improved livelihood and generation of useful data for both Africa and Brazil, the basis for foresight capacities and scenario mapping.
Recalling that the recently concluded Youth Technical Training Program (YTTP), under which 30 Africans were trained on cassava value chain in the centre, with support from African Development Bank (AfDB), FARA recognizes the connection between the two institutions offers an opportunity for to inject new ideas and technologies that would reactivate FARA’s Innovation Platforms by receiving and further empowering these and future trainees. Commenting during the meeting, Dr Hilton de Souza Gomes, the erstwhile Director General of Jigawa Research Institute (JRI), indicated that the proposed partnership for capacity building should be designed to engage both public and private sector players.
