Humidtropics/FARA to hold Marketplace Event on Systems Research in Agri-Food Systems.

Humidtropics/FARA will be holding a programme on the Marketplace Event titled: “Systems Research in the Context of Agri-Food Systems (AFS)”. The programme will hold at the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria between 15-17 November, 2016. It will consist of research ‘sellers’ and ‘buyers’ in inter-changing roles, and with lots of opportunities for ‘negotiation’ using innovative workshop formats.

Given the major transition taking place with regard to the 2nd cycle CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs), particularly the shift from commodity focus with standalone systems programs to agri-food systems (AFS), it is important to have an opportunity for sharing and learning in relation to systems integration. It is also important to demonstrate products from systems research that could be used in further research within AFS.

The main goal of the workshop is to strengthen understanding of systems research as part of AR4D (Agricultural Research for Development) with emphasis on strengthening systems research within the 2nd cycle CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs) portfolio.

Its objectives include:

  • To learn and share ideas among CRPs on how systems perspectives and approaches
have been built into the 2nd cycle proposals, and how they will be implemented.
  • To share key experiences and R4D (legacy) products arising from the research of
Humidtropics, and other systems CRPs (Drylands and Aquatic Agricultural Systems).
  • To learn the perspectives on integrated systems research from donors, investors, ISPC (Independent Science and Partnership Council), and other organizations.

The workshop will begin with an opening session, to be followed by 6 technical sessions. The main conclusions and lessons that describe the place of systems research within the 2nd cycle CRP portfolio will be pulled together and the major lessons will be indicated. In addition, actions for strengthening inter-CRP collaboration and the potential of Site Integration in that respect will be identified. Products from 1st cycle CRPs would also be linked to particular CRP functioning for 2nd cycle.
