FARA was voted into existence in 1997 at the 17th Plenary of the Special Programme for African Agricultural Research (SPAAR), a precursor organization to FARA, situated within the World Bank, by the Sub-Regional Organizations, including:
ASARECA: Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa
CORAF/WECARD: West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development
SADC-FANR (now CCARDESA): Centre for Coordination of Agricultural Research and Development for Southern Africa
FARA facilitated the establishment of the North African Sub-Regional Organization (NASRO). The launching meeting of the NASRO took place in Cairo, Egypt on 19 April 2009. Representatives from FARA, others SROs, and North Africa NARS attended the meeting.
