AFRICA’S MONTY JONES GOES HOME

 In Memoriam:

Dr. Monty Patrick Jones was born on February 5, 1951 and passed away on April 28, 2024. He was a compassionate and excellent leader touching the lives of all who had the privilege of working with him. He was the founding Executive Director and Head of Mission of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) from 2002-2013. In this role Prof Monty Jones strongly advocated for increased attention and investment in agricultural research and development in Africa, primarily at national level but also at supra national level, arguing that this was essential for the continent to realize its agricultural potential. To this end he spearheaded the alignment of national and regional agricultural strategies and investment plans and programmes to the continental framework for agriculture research and extension. He buttressed his advocacy by getting FARA to be mandated by the African Union Commission and AU-NEPAD as their technical organization on agricultural research. Prof Monty Jones also vigorously pushed for agricultural research to embrace the innovation systems approach where researchers and other actors in the value chain work collaboratively together to develop solutions demanded by end users and to ensure that those solutions are put into use. Because this approach offers higher development outcomes than conventional approaches it has now become a mainstream approach in agriculture research and innovation on the continent. During Prof Monty Jones 11-year tenure at FARA, the organization grew from scratch to become Africa’s voice on agriculture research; the continental platform for networking and exchange of knowledge in agriculture research and innovation; the broker of agriculture science and innovation partnerships for entities that wish to engage with Africa at continental level; and the lead institution responsible for formulating and operationalizing Africa’s agenda for increasing the deployment of science, technology and innovation in agriculture as a key pathway to achievement of the continent’s development goals.

In this role, he One of his many accomplishments was the development of the genetic process that resulted in the New Rice for Africa (NERICA), a high yielding yet hardy rice breed that has had a profound impact on rice production throughout Africa and Asia. Dr. Jones was awarded the World Food Prize in 2004 for his scientific innovation in the development of NERICA, the first African to receive the award, received an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree in 2005 for his innovative accomplishments by Birmingham University, and was named one of the most influential persons in the world in 2007 by Time Magazine. He was a tireless advocate for agricultural development, dedicating his time and expertise to effecting positive change in Africa.

Dr. Jones is survived by his wife, Geraldine Jones; daughter, Patricia Jones; son, Chuck Jones; daughters, Emma Benvenuti, Montina Befus, and Geraldine Jones; grandchildren, Isiah Jones, Aidan Benvenuti, Sophia Benvenuti, and Isabella Befus.  His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of working with him. As we mourn the loss of a great leader, we take solace in the knowledge that his legacy, achievements and work will continue to inspire the world. Though he may no longer walk among us, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the profound impact he made on the world. He will be remembered for his generosity, compassion, and unwavering kindness.

Rest in peace! Your brilliance, professionalism, ingenuity, kindness, and passion will remain with us.

I joined FARA in August 2004 and had the privilege to work with him. He was a man of principles and a perfectionist. He will make sure that every work is done perfectly, and every meeting is well prepared. For example, one month before a Board Meeting, no staff travels. Every presentation, every document to be presented to the Board would be reviewed. He would make sure everything is perfect. That was him.
He was a kind man with a good heart. He had compassion for humankind. Any time a staff was in trouble, he was there to give his support. He has been a blessing in the life of many, including me. We will miss you Prof. Monty Jones.
Adieu Prof. Monty Jones!
